PUR- Se avecina el sorteo

El sorteo del Campeonato FIBA-Américas Masculino 2009 se celebrará el martes, 9 de junio a las 12:00 p.m. en el Coliseo Roberto Clemente de San Juan, hogar del torneo que se celebrará del 26 de agosto al 6 de septiembre.

Este torneo tendrá a Argentina, Brasil, Canadá, Cuba, Islas Vírgenes de los Estados Unidos, México, Puerto Rico, Republica Dominicana, Uruguay y Venezuela disputando las cuatro plazas disponibles para el Mundial FIBA 2010.

Los diez equipos nacionales se dividirán en dos grupos de cinco cada uno. El país sede (Puerto Rico) seleccionará el grupo en el cual desea jugar cuando lleguen las dos últimas selecciones.



PUR – FIBA Americas Championship Draw on Tuesday:

The draw of the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship will be held on Tuesday, June 9 at 12:00 p.m. at Coliseo Roberto Clemente of San Juan, Puerto Rico, home of the tournament that will be played from August 26 until September 6.

This tournament has Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Cuba, Dominican Republic, México, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, U.S. Virgin Islands and Venezuela playing for four of the qualifying berths for the 2010 FIBA World Championship.

The ten national teams will be divided into two groups of five teams each. The host country (Puerto Rico) will select the group they want to participate when the two final selections are made.

USA- Preocupado Stern por LeBron

El silencio que guardó el alero estrella de los Cavaliers de Cleveland, LeBron James, al concluir el sexto partido de las finales de la Conferencia Este que perdió su equipo por 103-90 ante los Magic de Orlando "preocupa" al comisionado de la NBA, David Stern, y quiere conocer los motivos.

Stern dijo que no iba a dar ninguna valoración sobre la negativa de James de felicitar a los jugadores de los Magic por el triunfo y luego ni tan siquiera hablar con los periodistas, una actitud que ha recibido la crítica generalizada, hasta que hable con el propio interesado.

La posición de Stern fue dada a conocer a través de ESPN Radio, durante una entrevista en la que también habló de otros asuntos de intereses que afectan a la NBA como son las teorías de la conspiración para una Finales dirigidas, la economía y las apuestas.

Lo que sí explicó Stern fue la razón por la que la liga no multó a James, como hace con el resto de los jugadores que se niegan a hablar con la prensa al concluir los partidos oficiales.

En una aparición en el programa de "The Herd with Colin Cowherd", Stern reconoció que, para nada, se sentía "satisfecho" con el comportamiento que tuvo el Jugador Más Valioso (MVP) de la liga al concluir el sexto partido.

Sin embargo, cuando se le preguntó por qué la liga, a través de su portavoz oficial, Tim Frank, ha dicho que no iban a multar a James, como se hizo en situaciones anteriores, similares, Stern dijo que tenía pendiente una conversación con el jugador estrella de los Cavaliers.

"Estoy en el proceso de hacer una llamada telefónica o dos para hablar con LeBron ... así que no quiero comentar más de este asunto, de momento", señaló Stern. A la nueva pregunta del moderador del programa sobre si no se sentía feliz con este tipo de comportamiento, el comisionado respondió: "Creo que es correcto esa manera de expresarlo".

Sobre el mismo asunto, pero en concreto no sólo ya no hablar con los periodistas sino tampoco darle la mano a los jugadores del equipo rival y decir luego que su "filosofía" no es la de felicitar al rival, Stern admitió su "preocupación".

"Todo lo que haces en la NBA tiene una gran repercusión, por lo tanto me preocupa y ambas acciones son importantes porque una estaba relacionada con las normas y la otra con los valores y ambos se deben seguir y cumplir", subrayó Stern.

David Stern is not pleased with LeBron James after the Cavaliers star refused to speak to the media, and did not shake his opponents' hands, after his team was eliminated from the NBA playoffs Saturday night against the Magic, the NBA commissioner acknowledged on ESPN Radio.

Stern said he has reached out to James but is reserving judgment about the situation until he speaks with him.

An NBA spokesman said on Monday that James would not be fined for failing to address the media after the Game 6 loss. ESPN Radio host Colin Cowherd asked Stern why James has not been fined since the league has punished players in the past for violating its media guidelines.

"I'm in the process of making a phone call or two now to talk to LeBron," Stern said, "so I don't want to speak to that at this moment." But when asked if he is not happy with James, Stern replied, "I think that's fair to say."

ARG - Scola reafirma su compromiso para el Premundial

El pívot argentino Luis Scola reafirmó su compromiso para representar a Argentina en el Campeonato FIBA Américas 2009 a celebrarse en San Juan del 26 de agosto al 6 de septiembre.

"Quería aclarar que voy a estar en el Premundial", dijo el jugador en una conferencia celebrada en el restaurant Michelangelo de San Telmo.

Scola, quien fue el MVP del Campeonato FIBA Américas 2007, será nuevamente la pieza clave del equipo argentino que también contará con Carlos Delfino, Pablo Prigioni, Paolo Quinteros, entre otros.

Sobre las bajas en el torneo, Scola dijo: "Venga quien venga vamos a tener un equipo competitivo, me gustaría que vengan Manu (Ginóbili),Chapu (Nocioni), Fabri (Oberto), el Puma (Montecchia). Pero vendrán otros jugadores como Leo Mainoldi, Matías Sandes, Paolo Quinteros y Carlos Delfino y tendrán su oportunidad y nos prepararemos para estar a la altura de la competencia. Hay jugadores competitivos. El resultado que obtengamos dependerá de cómo nos preparemos y de la calidad de jugadores que tengamos".

Al preguntársele si tuvo problemas con los Rockets en pedir permiso para jugar, el jugador indicó: "Ellos me preguntaron si tenía que jugar en la Selección. Yo les dije que sí y no hicieron un drama del tema. Les expliqué que a mí me gusta jugar para el país y que me hace mal estar cinco meses parado. Ellos lo entendieron".



ARG - Scola reaffirms his commitment to play in FIBA Americas Championship:

Argentinean center Luis Scola reaffirmed his commitment to represent Argentina in the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship to be played in San Juan, Puerto Rico from August 26 to September 6.

"I want to clarify that I will be in the FIBA Americas Championship," said the player in a press conference at Michelangelo Restaurant of San Telmo.

Scola, who was the MVP of the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship, will be key again in the Argentinean team that also has Carlos Delfino, Pablo Prigioni, Paolo Quinteros, among others.

About some of the losses for the tournament, Scola said: "It doesn't matter who comes, we will have a competitive team, I would like to play with Manu (Ginóbili),Chapu (Nocioni), Fabri (Oberto), and Puma (Montecchia). There will be others like Leo Mainoldi, Matías Sandes, Paolo Quinteros, Carlos Delfino and they will have their opportunity and we will prepare to play at a high level. They are competitive players. The result will depend on the preparation and the quality of players that we have."

When he was asked if he had problems with the Rockets to play for the national team, he said: "They asked me if I had to play for the national team. I said yes and didn't make an issue out of it. I explained that I liked to play for my country and it is not helpful to be out for five months. They understand."

DOM - Villanueva contento con representar a República Dominicana

En una sala de chat de ESPN Deportes el jugador dominicano Charlie Villanueva expresó que estaba contento de representar a la República Dominicana en el Campeonato FIBA Américas y habló sobre su futuro en la NBA.

Villanueva, jugador de los Milwaukee Bucks en la NBA, debutará con la seleccion dominicana en el Campeonato FIBA Américas a celebrarse del 26 de agosto al 6 de septiembre en San Juan, Puerto Rico.

"Conseguí mi ciudadanía dual el pasado mes. Estoy esperando el pasaporte. Estoy excitado en jugar con República Dominicana. Me siento muy contento. Va a ser el primer año que Francisco García, Al Horford y yo vamos a jugar juntos", dijo Villanueva a los fanáticos.

Ya Villanueva visitó a su familia durante su primera temporada en la NBA y habló de las ciudades natales de sus padres.

"Mi mamá es de Cabrera y mi papá es de Santo Domingo. El primer año que estuve en la NBA pude ir a Santo Domingo a ver mi familia y mi abuela, que todavía vive en Cabrera".

El jugador es agente libre luego de un año sólido en la NBA donde promedió 16.2 puntos y 6.7 rebotes en 78 partidos.

"Es difícil. Me gustaría quedarme en Milwaukee, pero no se. Me gustaría estar más cerca de mi mamá. Me gustaría estar en un mercado más grande, hispano".

In an ESPN Deportes chat room Dominican star Charlie Villanueva said that he was happy to represent the Dominican Republic in the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship and also talked about his future in the NBA.

Villanueva, who plays for the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA, will make his debut for the Dominican Republic in the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship to be played from August 26 to September 6 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

"I already have my dual citizenship. I am waiting for the passport. I am excited to play for the Dominican Republic, I am happy. This will be the first year that Francisco García, Al Horford and I will play together," said to the fans.

The NBA star already visited his family during his first NBA season and talked about his parents.

"My mother is from Cabrera and my father from Santo Domingo. I visited Santo Domingo on my first year in the NBA to see my family and my grandmother, who still lives in Cabrera."

Villanueva is a free agent after his solid year in the NBA where he averaged 16.2 points and 6.7 rebounds in 78 games.

"It is difficult. I would like to stay in Milwaukee but I don't know. I would like to live closer to my mom. I would like to be in a bigger and Hispanic market."

BRA- Universo vs. Flamengo

El club Universo/BRB ganó su serie ante Minas Tenis 3-1 luego de derrotarlos en el cuarto juego 101-90. Ahora Universo se mide a Flamengo en un duelo de equipos que lucharon el primer lugar durante toda la temporada.

Alex García anotó 20 puntos, Arthur Luiz 16 y Estevam junto a Valtinho 12 cada uno por Universo. En la derrota Murilo Becker anotó 24 puntos, Ricardo Probst 17 y Joe Shipp 14.

Universo ganó la primera mitad 48-44 y en el último cuarto aseguró la victoria con una gran actuación ofensiva, terminando con 34 puntos.

Minas ganó el primer juego de la serie 91-78 pero perdieron los otros tres de forma consecutiva.

La final comienza el martes, 9 de junio y es al mejor de cinco partidos.

Universo/BRB/Financeira Brasília won their semifinal series against Minas Tenis 3-1 by winning on game four 101-90. Now Universo faces Flamengo in a duel of teams that fought for first place the whole year in the Brazilian National League.

Alex García netted 20 points, Arthur Luiz 16 and Estevam along with Valtinho 12 each for Universo. In the loss Murilo Becker had 24 points, Ricardo Probst 17 and Joe Shipp 14.

Universo won the first half 48-44 and in the final quarter they secured the win by scoring 34 points.

Minas won the first game 91-78 but lost the remaining three games in a row.

The finals begin on June 9 and are a best of five series.

PUR- Lista la Copa Marchand

La segunda edición de la Copa Tuto Marchand se celebrará del 18 al 20 de agosto en el Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot siendo la última prueba para el Campeonato FIBA-Américas Masculino 2009.

Argentina, Brasil, Canadá y Puerto Rico estarán con sus planteles finales para este torneo preparatorio que durará tres días. Se espera la participación de jugadores como José Juan Barea (Dallas Mavericks), Carlos Arroyo (Maccabi Tel Aviv), Luis Scola (Houston Rockets), Carlos Delfino (BC Khimki), Pablo Prigioni (Tau Cerámica), Leandro Barbosa (Phoenix Suns), Nené Hilario (Denver), Carl English (Gran Canaria), entre otros.

Brasil ganó el torneo del 2007 por goal average al derrotar a Canadá 74-61. Puerto Rico fue el único equipo en salir del torneo sin victorias pero tuvo una buena actuación en el Campeonato FIBA-Américas 2007 ganando la medalla de bronce.

En la primera edición el mejor anotador fue Scola con promedio de 20,7 puntos por juego seguido de su compañero Paolo Quinteros con 17,3 unidades. Brasil fue liderado por Tiago Splitter que promedió 14,3 puntos y 7,3 rebotes. Marcelinho Machado de Brasil fue el Jugador más Valioso de la competencia con media de 11,3 puntos siendo su actuación más destacada ante Argentina al anotar 18 tantos.



PUR - Marchand Continental Cup is ready:

The second edition of the Marchand Continental Cup will be played from August 18-20 at Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot. This competition is the last test for the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship (World Qualifier).

Argentina, Brazil, Canada and Puerto Rico will be with their final rosters for the three day tournament. Players like José Juan Barea (Dallas Mavericks), Carlos Arroyo (Maccabi Tel Aviv), Luis Scola (Houston Rockets), Carlos Delfino (BC Khimki), Pablo Prigioni (Tau Cerámica), Leandro Barbosa (Phoenix Suns), Nené Hilario (Denver), Carl English (Gran Canaria), are expected to play among other stars.

Brazil won the 2007 edition by goal average after defeating Canada 74-61. Puerto Rico could not get a win but did well in the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship by winning the Bronze medal.

In the first edition Luis Scola was the best scorer with an average of 20.7 points per game and was followed by Paolo Quinteros with 17.3. Brazil was led by Tiago Splitter who averaged 14.3 points and 7.3 rebounds. Marcelinho Machado of Brazil was the MVP after averaging 11.3 points, having his best performance against Argentina with 18 points.

ARG- González acepta a Quimsa

El veterano pívot Román González jugará las próximas dos temporadas para Quimsa, luego de salir subcampeón de la Liga con Peñarol.

Firmará en los próximos días su vinculación a la entidad santiagueña por dos campañas, en el que será el gran pase del año.

Todavía ninguna de las partes lo puede oficializar, pero quedó arreglada la incorporación de González a Quimsa de Santiago del Estero por los próximos dos campeonatos.

El pivote se une a Damián Tintorelli en cuanto a las incorporaciones de la entidad santiagueña, y a los renovados Julio Mázzaro, Jonathan Treise y Carlos Romano.

La llegada de González potenciará de forma notable el juego interior de Quimsa, que si bien perdió a Gabriel Mikulas, no sólo sumó a González, sino también a Tintorelli.

Román viene de jugar una excelente serie final ante Atenas de Córdoba y, dentro de la sorpresa general que causa su fichaje por Quimsa, más lo es el hecho de que se haga el acuerdo por dos años.

Veteran center Roman Gonzalez will play the next two seasons with Quimsa after being the runner up in Liga Nacional with Peñarol.

He will sign in the next couple of days with the team from Santiago del Estero for two seasons and that could be the signing of the year.

He joins Damián Tintorelli along with Julio Mázzaro, Jonathan Treise and Carlos Romano who will repeat with the team. The arrival of Gonzalez, despite the loss of Gabriel Mikulas, strengthens the paint along with Tintorelli.

Roman played an excellent final against Atenas de Cordoba and the biggest surprise was the two year agreement.

ARG- Dispuesto Prigioni para el Premundial

Pablo Prigioni comentó, en declaraciones telefónicas al programa argentino de Canal 7 “Londres 2012”, que su intención es acudir con la Selección Argentina al Premundial del verano:

“En este momento tengo la cabeza puesta en el torneo de acá, donde estamos jugando las semifinales contra el Real Madrid, pero de no mediar ningún inconveniente importante, me gustaría estar en el Premundial”.

Argentina se jugará una plaza para el Mundial de Turquía de 2010 en la cita de Puerto Rico, aunque aún varias de sus piezas clave deben decidir si acuden o no al torneo con la albiceleste.

Pablo Prigioni said inside the TV program London 2012 in Channel 7 of Argentina that he will play in the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship.

"Right now I have my head in this tournament, where we play the semifinals against Real Madrid, but without any inconvenience I will play in the FIBA Americas Championship."

Argentina will play for a spot in the 2010 FIBA World Championship and many key players are expected to agree and play.

MEX- Interesado Osimani

El entrenador uruguayo Alberto Espasandín seguirá su carrera en México ya que fue contratado por Pioneros de Quintana Roo.

“Pedí en principio que aseguraran las fichas de Toñito García y Ricardo Meléndez y viajo en esta semana a Cancún por unos días para poder conversar tranquilos sobre el resto del plantel. Si fuera por mí repetía a varios jugadores de Tecos pero con mucha razón Pioneros quiere tratar de construir un grupo pensando más en el futuro y no sólo en esta próxima temporada. Así que hay que estudiar las posibilidades de reclutamiento que tenemos y proceder a rodear a Toño y a Ricky adecuadamente. Claro que contar con Martin Osimani sería fabuloso pero depende un poco de su cotización que es muy elevada. Voy a tratar de que hagan el intento” señaló.

Uruguayan coach Alberto Espasandín will continue his career in Mexico as he was signed by Pioneros de Quintana Roo.

"I asked them to sign Toñito García and Ricardo Meléndez. I will travel this week to Cancun to talk with the rest of the players. If it was up to me I will repeat the roster from Tecos but Pioneros is trying to build for the future. There are many options to surround Toño and Ricky. It would be fabulous with Martin Osimani but his value is elevated. I will tell them to try."

USA- Operan a Garnett

El jugador de los Celtics de Boston Kevin Garnett ha sido operado con éxito de la lesión en la rodilla que se produjo el pasado 19 de febrero y que le ha impedido disputar la fase final de la temporada.

Garnett, que sólo ha jugado 4 de los últimos 26 partidos de los Celtics, y nunca con más de 18 minutos sobre el parquet, pasó por el quirófano para corregir sus problemas de rodilla y estar preparado para la siguiente temporada.

El jugador franquicia de los Celtics ha asistido desde el banquillo a la eliminación de su equipo, vigente campeón de la NBA, en las semifinales de Conferencia, según ha anunciado el presidente del 'equipo verde', Danny Ainge.



USA - Garnett undergoes surgery:

Boston Celtics star Kevin Garnett underwent surgery on his right knee that was injured on February 19 and kept him out of action for the rest of the season.

Garnett, who played four of the last 26 games for the Celtics, will be ready for next season.

The Celtics franchise player cheered his team from the bench but they were eliminated in the Eastern Conference semifinals. The announcement was made by team president Danny Ainge.

ARG/BRA - Argentina campeón del Sudamericano U17

Argentina ganó su cuarto campeonato seguido del Sudamericano U17 al vencer a Uruguay 63-50. Brasil fue el último clasificado al Premundial al dominar nuevamente a Venezuela 107-62.

Los argentinos dominaron el primer periodo 17-12 donde las segundas oportunidades y los tiros a larga distancia fueron cruciales.

En el segundo periodo Argentina tuvo problemas en el lado ofensivo mientras que Uruguay hizo sus ajustes para terminar arriba 26-24.

Argentina empezó el tercer periodo con un avance de 11-2 y terminaron arriba 43-36. Los uruguayos reaccionaron en el cuarto periodo pero ya era muy tarde.

Juan José Giaveno hizo 17 puntos y Carlos Fernando Paredes 10 por Argentina que terminó invicto.

Por Uruguay Diego Garcia Salort anotó 18 puntos y Mathias Calfani 10 unidades.

Brasil se convirtió en el tercer clasificado al Campeonato FIBA Américas U18 luego de dominar nuevamente a Venezuela.

Los brasileños ganaron el primer periodo 27-16 y siguieron sumando durante el segundo cuarto para terminar la primera mitad arriba 44-29.

La mayor ventaja durante la segunda mitad fue de 47 puntos (106-59) logrado en el cuarto parcial.

Felipe Taddei anotó 23 puntos por Brasil.

ARG/BRA - Argentina wins the South American U17 Championship

Argentina won their fourth straight South American U17 Championship by beating Uruguay 63-50. Brazil qualified for the FIBA Americas U18 Championship by crushing Venezuela 107-62.

The Argentineans dominated the first quarter 17-12 thanks to the second opportunities and long distance shots.

In the second quarter Argentina had offensive problems while Uruguay made some adjustments to finish up 26-24.

Argentina started the third quarter with an 11-2 run and finished up 43-36. The Uruguayans reacted in the final quarter but it was too late.

Juan José Giaveno netted 17 points and Carlos Paredes 10 for Argentina who finished undefeated.

Diego Garcia had 18 and Mathias Calfani 10 for Uruguay.

Brazil became the third team to qualify into the FIBA Americas U18 Championship by crushing Venezuela again.

The Brazilians won the first quarter 27-16 and kept adding to finish at halftime up 44-29.

Their biggest lead was 47 points (106-59) in the final quarter.

Felipe Taddei netted 23 points for Brazil.
